AWS partners with University of Nairobi to advance Cloud Computing skills in Kenya

AWS partners with University of Nairobi

  • AWS held a three-day cloud computing training at the University of Nairobi, teaching 125 students foundational cloud skills through its Skills Center Community Classroom program.

  • The initiative is part of AWS’s broader push to close the digital skills gap in Africa, with similar programs already running in Cape Town and remote access available continent-wide.

  • Students received hands-on, instructor-led training and were encouraged to pursue AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, with many expressing that the sessions improved their understanding and confidence.

  • Kenya’s growing tech ecosystem and demand for cloud talent make such programs timely, especially with 230 million digital jobs projected in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has completed a three-day, in-person cloud computing training at the University of Nairobi (UoN).

This initiative aims to equip students with essential digital skills and address Africa’s growing demand for cloud expertise.

The training involved 125 first- and second-year students, focusing on foundational cloud concepts and practical applications. By collaborating with UoN, AWS introduced its Skills Center curriculum to Nairobi, fostering the development of future cloud professionals in Africa.

In 2023, AWS launched its first Skills Center outside the U.S. in Cape Town, South Africa. These centers are designed to provide free cloud skills training, removing barriers for non-technical learners and opening up new career opportunities.

The Cape Town center also offers virtual instructor-led training, allowing students across Africa, including those in Kenya who missed the Nairobi event, to participate remotely.
