Filecoin Orbit Kenya and GDSC UoN's Open Hack Day on the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM)

On March 17, 2023, Filecoin Orbit Kenya and GDSC UoN hosted an Open Hack Day focused on the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM). The event aimed to promote the use of Filecoin's decentralized data storage marketplace, protocol, and cryptocurrency to make the web more secure and efficient.

Mental Health & Infectious Diseases (COVID-19) Awareness

The aim of the webinar is to sensitize our students/staff on the importance of mental health and focus on post COVID-19 recovery strategy. Drug and substance abuse, peer-pressure, poor academic performance, work-life balance, financial constraints and personal/family issues are among reported factors associated with mental health issues. The Department’s concern is that the issues may also emanate from losses during COVID-19 pandemic and there is need for recovery strategies.

OPEN CALL FOR INNOVATION INCUBATION AND COMMERCIALIZATION (IIC) PROGRAM

The Innovation Incubation Commercialization (IIC) program is a university of Nairobi program implemented by Intellectual Property Management Office and C4DLab. This program is for innovators with innovations that have potential for market commercialization. In the program, experienced industry players will coach and mentor the innovator teams in their quest to refine their innovations by translating them from ideas and prototypes to minimum viable products and services.

Kenomo Project Close-out Workshop

Kenya Norway Mobility (KeNoMo)( Project is an academic collaboration that establishes a long-term sustainable relationship between KCA University, University of Stavanger (UiS), and University of Nairobi (UoN). The project is funded by NORPART – Norwegian Partnership Programme for Global Academic Cooperation and it is expected to end in march 2023.The main objective of the project is to facilitate mutual student mobility and academic cooperation between the partners, and will thus enhance the quality of computer science education in both Norway and Kenya.

Algorand Foundation announces global winners for its $50M blockchain research and education programme

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Nairobi has received a sub-ward of $160,000 to
promote blockchain research and learning at the institution. The main grant of $8 Million was awarded
by the Algorand Foundation to the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University (USA) which
led a consortium consisting of 15 other universities from five continents that will benefit as
subawardees. At the University of Nairobi, the project team is led by Dr. Andrew Kahonge and Dr. Evans

Equity Hackathon

The Hackathon was set to run from the 17th February to 17th March this year and has been phased into 4 stages. The first phase  involve instructor-led and self-paced training of the participants on Microsoft Azure and the Business Problem Statements. In the second stage, the students went  through the coding with mentorship from representatives from Equity, University of Nairobi, Meru University of Science and Technology and Microsoft. Their solutions  then went  through a 1st and 2nd knock off stage, that  culminate in the selection of the 3 winners.
